Energy Management
Energy is not just about being tired.
Everyone gets tired. Sleep fixes that, usually. What Owen had run out of was something else: a reserve that gets used up by things like managing a busy canteen, tracking what three different teachers meant by the same word, noticing every change in classroom lighting, and holding himself together at a birthday party where the games kept changing without warning. Each of those things costs. Some days the costs are higher than others. Thursday was the end of a week with too many high-cost days in a row.
This is what people mean when they talk about energy management. For many autistic and ADHD people, going through an ordinary day takes more out of the body than it appears to take from the outside. The processing is real, even when it is invisible.
The spoon theory is a widely used framework in disabled and neurodivergent communities for describing finite daily energy. It was coined in 2003 by Christine Miserandino, a writer with lupus, who used a handful of spoons from a diner table to show her friend what it felt like to ration energy across a day. Each activity costs spoons. When they are gone, they are gone. Unlike the fatigue of a healthy person who has simply worked hard, they cannot be replenished by choosing to push through.
The framework translates readily to autistic experience. Autistic people are generally processing more sensory and social information than their neurotypical peers, often simultaneously: filtering sounds, reading facial expressions against an internal script, monitoring a body that gives unclear signals, tracking social rules that don't quite make intuitive sense. This background processing is not optional and does not stop between tasks. On high-demand days, even activities that appear low-effort from the outside, a shopping trip, a family meal, a phone call, can cost heavily.
What complicates this further is that the cost varies. The same canteen that cost two spoons on Monday may cost five on Friday, depending on what has already been used. This variability can look like inconsistency to observers, and it is sometimes read as unreliability or lack of effort. It is neither. It is the arithmetic of a system running closer to capacity than most people realise.
Energy depletion, if not managed, leads toward burnout, a more serious and longer-lasting state covered later in this book. What helps in the shorter term is pacing: building rest into days rather than waiting for collapse, recognising which activities cost more, and protecting low-cost recovery activities like time alone, special interests, or quiet physical movement. It also means tolerating cancelled plans and early exits without reading them as rejection, because the person leaving is often not leaving you; they are leaving because there is nothing left.
- Understanding that energy varies day to day: the same task on different days is genuinely different.
- Building in recovery time after high-cost activities, not as a reward but as maintenance.
- Not requiring explanations or reasons when a person needs to opt out: "I can't today" is complete information.
- Protecting access to the activities that refill rather than drain (usually quiet, low-social, sensory-calm time).
- "But you managed last week." (Last week may have been very different in terms of cumulative load.)
- Scheduling recovery time away from the person: rest is not a social activity.
- Treating cancellations as personal rejection or laziness.
- Assuming that looking calm means feeling fine.
