Recovery and Recharging
Recovery is not a single thing.
Sleep helps. Quiet helps. But what restores an autistic nervous system after a demanding day is often more specific than that, and the specificity matters.
For many people, the most restorative state is deep absorption in something they care about: a special interest, a familiar piece of music played again, a video rewatched because the words are known and nothing will surprise. Researchers studying monotropism, the tendency toward concentrated, deep focus, have noted that this kind of absorption produces something close to a flow state, effortless attention with no background processing cost. After a day full of background processing cost, effortless attention is what the system needs. It is not avoidance. It is medicine.
Alone time serves its own purpose. A recent UK study by Florence Neville and colleagues, published in Autism in Adulthood, looked at how autistic adults actually use the time they spend alone. What they found wasn't a single state but a sequence in four parts. First, reacting: the immediate response to whatever has been too much. Then retreating: withdrawing from the input that has piled up. Then regulating: the slow work of letting the nervous system come back down to its own baseline. And only then reconnecting: becoming ready, at the person's own pace, to be among other people again. The alone time was not the goal. It was the process that made everything after it possible.
What looks like doing nothing is often doing quite a lot.
Recovery from a demanding day for an autistic person typically requires more than rest in the conventional sense. What restores varies significantly between individuals but tends to share some features: low or controllable sensory input, absence of social demands, access to something that produces the flow state (most often a special interest), and physical comfort (a familiar texture, a comfortable position, a known and stable environment).
The expectation that recovery should look conventional, going out, being social, doing cheerful activities, is one that regularly causes harm. Well-meant suggestions to engage more, to socialise, to "treat yourself" to something outward-facing, add demand to a system that is trying to reduce demand. The person knows what they need. The most effective support is often to trust that knowledge and to not require it to be justified.
This has implications for how downtime is structured for autistic children and adults. Unstructured time that genuinely has no requirements is valuable. Time spent on special interests is not wasted; it is restorative in a measurable and real way. Screen time in service of a special interest or a familiar and controllable sensory environment is not the same as undifferentiated passive consumption. The function matters.
The last chapter in this book returns to where we started: to the ordinary day, and what it asks. What we hope by now is that the ordinary day looks a little different. That the costs are more visible. That the ordinary tools of recovery, the floor of a bedroom, the ceiling at the right height, the quiet, the known programme on again, are recognisable as what they are: the work of getting ready for tomorrow.
