Stimming
Stimming is short for self-stimulatory behaviour. It covers hand-flapping, rocking, spinning, humming, repeating sounds or words, tapping rhythms, rubbing textures, clicking, bouncing, and dozens of variations. The list is long because bodies are inventive when it comes to finding what helps.
Most people stim. Pen clicking. Leg bouncing. Hair twirling. Chewing the end of a pencil. These are ordinary, unremarked, and tolerated without comment. For many autistic people, stimming serves the same purpose but runs deeper and shows more, which is where the looking starts.
What stimming does, in practice: it regulates. When sensory input is too high, rhythmic repetitive movement offers a counterweight. When emotion is very large, the movement gives it somewhere to go. When concentration is needed, the body's background motion keeps the rest of the system steady. The function is real and consistent, which is why suppressing stims tends to make things worse, not better. The movement was doing work. Taking it away doesn't remove the need; it just removes the tool.
Research on what stimming actually does, and what it costs to stop, has shifted substantially in recent decades. The largest community-based study of autistic adults' own accounts (Kapp and colleagues, 2019) found a consistent picture: stimming is described by the people doing it as serving real regulatory functions, helping with overwhelming sensory input, managing emotional intensity, and supporting focus. Suppressing it has measurable physiological and cognitive costs. The body is spending resource on the suppression that would otherwise go toward the task. And autistic people who report suppressing stims do so almost exclusively for external reasons, to avoid social judgment, not because the stim is uncomfortable or unhelpful.
The framing of stimming as something to be corrected has a long history in autism intervention, and it is increasingly contested both by researchers and by autistic people describing their own experience. The behaviours that look unusual are largely harmless; the behaviours that feel harmful are the suppression itself, and the accumulated cost of spending years learning to perform a stillness that the body does not naturally produce.
There is a useful distinction between stimming that is self-injurious (which warrants attention to the underlying need driving it) and stimming that is simply visible. Visible is not the same as harmful. A child who rocks at their desk is not disrupting their own learning; they may be enabling it.
Allowing and accommodating stims, rather than eliminating them, is what the evidence now supports. Stim-friendly environments, ones where movement and sensory tools are available and unremarked, reduce distress and increase focus. This is achievable in classrooms and at home with relatively small adjustments.
- Allowing and supporting stimming unless it causes physical harm.
- Providing sensory tools (fidget items, textured objects, space to move) as everyday resources.
- Understanding that a child who appears to be fidgeting may be regulating themselves to focus.
- Separating "looks unusual to me" from "is causing harm."
- "Can you please sit still." (The movement is usually the reason they can sit at all.)
- Requiring suppression in social or educational settings without offering alternatives.
- Treating stimming as a behaviour to be trained away.
- Assuming that stillness equals calm.
